Visual Artist and Art Educator
My name is Cynthia DeCoste, and creativity has always been part of my life. Growing up surrounded by art, I developed an early appreciation for its ability to tell stories, spark imagination, and bring people together. It was only natural that I would become both an artist and an educator.
After studying Fine Arts and earning my teaching degree at Western University in Ontario, I spent many years balancing two careers—teaching by day and creating commissioned portrait drawings by night. While portrait work taught me valuable skills, I eventually longed for the freedom to create from my own imagination.
A move from urban Ontario to a small community in northern New Brunswick changed the direction of my art. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the East Coast, I traded my pencils for paintbrushes and began exploring the colourful, whimsical landscapes that have become my signature style.
For many years, teaching and painting went hand in hand, with each enriching the other. After retiring from teaching in 2021, I opened a café and art studio where I continue to paint, teach workshops, and share my love of creativity with others.
My work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout New Brunswick. In 2025, I was commissioned by McDonald's Canada to create an original painting celebrating the 30th anniversary of the McFlurry, bringing my colourful interpretation of the Canadian landscape to a national audience.
Today, I continue to find inspiration in the East Coast's changing skies, winding shorelines, and small coastal communities. When I'm not in the studio, you'll usually find me exploring the coastline, hiking local trails, or caring for my small hobby farm by the ocean—places where many of my paintings begin.
